University Supervision Workshop 2012
University Supervision Workshop 2012
Monday 20 February 2012
This workshop, presented by Beverley Burns and Philippa Thomas, is aimed at enhancing the supervisory relationships of interns and second year clinical psychology students on placement, and their supervisors. It will also have wider application to supervisors of students in other health professions, and to supervision of qualified psychologists, especially those in the early stages of their careers. It will highlight the role that supervisors play in producing competent, professional, ethical, and reflective practitioners who can move smoothly into a supervised work environment, ready to consolidate the skills they have developed during training.
Key areas to be covered will include reviewing what we hope to achieve through supervision (transformational learning); best practice in supervision (setting up supervision, evaluation, developing competence); supervisor interventions (students’ developmental needs, feedback, challenging students, the gatekeeper role); and developing reflective practice (learning styles, learning models which promote reflective practice, resilience).
The workshop will start at 9.00 and finish at 4.30 approximately, and will include morning and afternoon tea breaks and lunch. The venue will be at the University of Waikato (room to be announced). The cost will be free for recent and future (2010-2013) supervisors of University of Waikato students, and $141 for others (payable upon registration). Numbers will be limited to no more than 40 people so that the activities and discussion are meaningful and useful for all those attending. Handouts and reference lists will be emailed to participants before the workshop so that participants can do some preparatory reading and print off and bring copies of key materials with them to the workshop.
