Mentalisation Based Therapy (MBT) is an attachment-based dynamic psychotherapeutic model first developed in the UK by Anthony Bateman and Peter Fonagy in the 1990s. It was specifically designed to work with people with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and is now considered one of the most effective models for the treatment of BPD. Ongoing developments and applications of MBT have seen it used effectively for a range of conditions including personality disorders, eating disorders, and complex PTSD.

This one day workshop is intended to equip participants with a basic understanding of the MBT model of therapy and how it can be applied in work with complex presentations. We will introduce the mentalizing stance and the three pre-mentalising modes which can show up in the therapy room. We will also explore the four mentalizing poles which you may recognize in your clients. The MBT understanding of transference and counter-transference will also be considered in our work with clients when our own attachment system is activated. The MBT model has a core set of skills which can be used across therapy modalities. We will practice these during the day and you are encouraged to bring real experiences from your own practice to use.

Foundational knowledge of Attachment Theory, BPD, and CPTSD will be essential in order to gain the most from this training.
