ADHD Medication Basics:

Supporting Your Clients with Confidence

Presenters

Petra Hoggarth is a clinical psychologist based in Christchurch, New Zealand. Her professional focus is on adult mental health, particularly in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD. In her private practice, Petra encounters a diverse range of clients, many of whom have ADHD. Her interest in neurodiversity has both personal and professional roots, particularly influenced by her experiences as a parent to two neurodivergent children, one of whom is ADHD and autistic. These experiences have shaped her approach to therapy, underlining the importance of acceptance and understanding in supporting neurodivergent individuals. Petra is committed to her role in helping individuals thrive within a more inclusive society.

Details:

Stimulant medication is the most effective evidence-based treatment for ADHD, with approximately 80% of individuals experiencing significant symptom improvement across all age groups—from children to older adults. When optimised, these medications often result in minimal side effects. In contrast, therapy alone is less effective for many individuals with ADHD.  As such, having a basic understanding of ADHD medication can be invaluable for psychologists who want to provide the best support to their ADHD clients.

This presentation will cover how stimulant medications work in the brain, the options currently available in New Zealand, common side effects, and how to have informed, supportive conversations with clients about medication—similar to how we might already discuss antidepressants or other treatments in a therapeutic context.
