Workshop Description:
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, goal-oriented conversation which pays particular attention to the language of change.
MI is designed to strengthens personal motivation and commitment for change or growth and can be useful to increase client motivation and engagement in the therapeutic process.
This interactive one-day workshop is informed by latest developments in and understandings of MI.
The workshop will include a summary of the research evidence for the efficacy of MI and the mechanisms of change within MI, as well as MI understandings of ambivalence and resistance, and how to work with these.

Dr Eileen Britt is a Registered Clinical Psychologist with experience in working in mental health, health, and criminal justice settings.
Eileen is a member of the Motivational Interviewing of Trainers (MINT), an international organisation of MI trainers which promotes best practice in MI training, research and practice, and a MINT certified MI trainer.
Eileen has extensive experience in providing MI training (introductory to advanced), supervision and coaching, and coding training for a range of NGO services, and governmental and professional organisations.
In her role at the University of Canterbury, Eileen teaches MI in the postgraduate diploma of clinical psychology programme.
She is also involved in researching MI, including its use with different populations (e.g., youth and adults with diabetes); as a pre-treatment engagement intervention (e.g., for youth with mental health disorders or perpetrators of intimate partner violence); in different settings (e.g., sports coaching and Work and Income); and the training of MI.
Eileen is also one of the authors of Takitaki Mai: A guide to Motivational Interviewing for Māori practitioners.
